Solitaire you can play with a keyboard or a screen reader

Yes — you can play every game here without a mouse, and without installing anything. Press Tab to put a cursor on the table, move it with the arrow keys, press Enter to pick a card up and again to put it down, and press S to have the whole table read out to you.

Can you play solitaire without a mouse?

You can. Every card and every pile can be reached with the arrow keys, and every move you could make by tapping can be made by pressing Enter. Nothing here needs dragging — dragging is the first thing that becomes difficult, and this site does not use it for anything, mouse or not.

Does it work with a screen reader?

It does. Every card and pile has a proper name, so your screen reader says “Five of spades moved to Column 5” rather than reading out something meaningless.

There is also a key that most card games do not have. Press S and the game describes the entire table in one go — how many cards are in each pile, which card is on top, and how many are still face down. A sighted player gets that in a glance; without it you would have to walk sixteen piles with the arrow keys to build the same picture. Runs of empty piles are collapsed, so it says “Suit piles 1 to 4, all empty” instead of reciting them one at a time.

It only ever reads out what is there. It never suggests a move — there is a Hint button for that, and it lights a move up rather than making it for you.

What are the keyboard controls?

KeyWhat it does
TabPuts a cursor on the table
Arrow keysMove the cursor from card to card and pile to pile
EnterPick a card up; press again on the destination to put it down
SRead out everything on the table

Nothing is timed, so there is no rush between key presses, and you can undo as many moves as you like.

Which games can be played this way?

All ten of them, in the same way:

What if you can see the screen, but the cards are too small?

The cards here are drawn large to begin with, and you can make them larger still — the size is yours to set, not ours. The numbers and suit marks are printed big and plainly rather than decoratively, and the writing everywhere on the site has a minimum size it is never allowed to go below.

Your browser's own zoom works properly too. The page is built so that enlarging it moves things around sensibly instead of pushing the table off the side of the screen. There is a separate page about the card sizes, the big-number deck and the table colours.

Is there anything to install?

No. There is nothing to download, no account to make, and no password to remember. Open the page and the cards are dealt.

Nothing is stored on your computer either — no cookies, and nothing that could recognise you if you come back tomorrow. Nothing on these pages is loaded from any other company, which is why you will never see a box asking you to accept anything before you can play.

Why this exists

Card games that can be played by keyboard or read aloud almost all have to be installed — they are programs for a particular computer or phone. There was no reason for that to be true of a web page, so this one is not.
